From Branagh's half-baked performance through to the totally ludicrous and altered ending this film is a stinker! Some of the sets are impressive and, at times, suitably chilling but even they and De Niro cannot resurrect the clunky screenplay.

Key elements of Shelley's morbid but fascinating story are completely overlooked, Frankenstein's fight with his morality and the monster's eloquence and sensitivity for a start. The less said about Helena Bonham-Carter's ill-fated Elizabeth, frazzling head and all, the better.

Frankly, Mary Shelley's masterpiece deserves far better.

  • Watch this monstrosity at your peril!

A total mess, with an awful script and narcissistic Branagh, who seems to spend most of the film running around with his torso covered in baby-oil that could have surely eased his monster's skin irritations. It tries to condense the book, but completely loses sight of its tone. Some of the dialogue is so horribly expositional and trite, and the acting so bewilderingly hammy, that I fear De Niro must have felt more hideous then he looked. I had to watch it in two attempts - a week apart - just to get through it I found it so hard going. You will lose two hours of your life that you will not get back by watching this.

  • OK but a bit disappointing

Having just finished the book, I was disappointed by the film. The book was understated, suppressed horror, but the film was brash. De Niro's monster was magnificent, but Kenneth Brannagh's performance was more melodrama than madness. Although it stayed quite close to the book, there were significant parts which would have showed Frankenstein's inner monster but were not portrayed correctly. My advice would be to read the book. You won't be disappointed.

I actually really enjoyed this film. theres lots of action, great stuff, and it sticks to the original story by Mary Shelley.

I've watched it lots of times and still find it brilliant.

The only downside I guess is the love scene, which really didn't need to be there.
