Ahead of its time

Dreyer directed one of the most celebrated of silent films; 'Passion of Joan of Arc' which I saw some years ago. This film of the reform of a male chauvinist suffers from too many long intertitles which break into the action. That said, the story still interests and Dreyer's alchemy with actors is well to the fore: he gets wonderful performances from his cast. A bonus on this disc is an interesting documentary on Dreyer who must be considered one of the greatest artists who worked in the media of cinema. If you are interested in film as an artform this dvd is well worth renting.- Was this review helpful to you?

A lesson in family life
By a customer from Morden, Surrey , 04 Jan 2007Though dated, this silent black and white captured our attention. We were appalled at the insensitivity of the 'Master' and felt pity for his family. Delighted, though, when the aged female lead took charge. She taught him a lesson or two in humility as he took on tasks his wife had done. Things nearly go awry but the ending was a victory for good sense.- Was this review helpful to you?
