"...A delightfully twisted fairy tale that artfully juggles broad tom-foolery and sly drollery, along with a generous serving of sight gags enhanced by special effects..."
This adaptation is paradoxical, a film celebrating the fruits of book-reading that's not as good as the original novel.... read more on Time Out
"...An ideal rental for the legions of kids..." -- Rating: B+
This film is great for the kids.
I like the way the young girl is literally hated by her father for being smart, and that fuels her telekinesis powers.
A nice twist is when she decides to stay with her school teacher because she is better to her than her own mother/father, which is just like a young kid going to their friend's house and thinking that their friend's parents are better than their own.
So like I said before, this film is great for the kids but not for teenagers and above.
my daughter and i absolutly love this film. it is truly magical and a family film for all to enjoy, its both sad and happy and very funny, and cleverly done and would recommend for anyone to watch it.
Don't let the nay sayers fool you - this is an ace film of an even better book.

I absolutely LOVE this film and even though I am over 30 it's one of my favourite ever !
Pam Ferris is totally brilliant as 'The Trunchbull ' you just wouldn't recognise her from Darling Buds, Danny de Vito plays a blinder as nasty, crooked Dad, It's a great film to watch as a family or on your own no matter what age you are, a real feel good film !
Excellent film for all the family.
Highly recommended.
Great family film this
this was a great film if u like watching movies with make belive then this is the film for u,totally enjoyable to watch, i liked it so much i went out and bought it.
This is one of the best live action films made for and about kids. It is in its nature a great time for parents too. Matilda is a quirky, clever offering from Danny de Vito. You will not regret renting this one.
This is a film with casting to die for. Pam Ferris makes a marvellous Miss Trunchbull who is a force to be reckoned with. Mara Wilson is excellent in the title role and together with Danny DeVito who plays her car salesman father and Rhea Pearlman who plays her bingo loving Mother, they make a very entertaining threesome to watch. Matilda is a very talented young lady with some surprising gifts and the film shows her experiences at a nightmare school which is run by the formidable Miss Trunchbull. This film has lots of laugh out loud scenes, and a very happy ending. A delight to watch again and again.
My little girl loved this film. She sat for the whole film in silence, totally rivetted to the screen, just the thing for a peaceful afternoon!!
