“Are you from the Matrix?”…”Yes, no. I mean I was”.

This dialogue encapsulates all that’s wrong with the Matrix. Every question and there is there an endless stream of questions in the script. How long? When Will? What If? For every question though, there is seemingly two or three answers. It’s like a the film got mixed up with a edition of “The Weakest Link”.

This po-faced philosophising becomes infuriating after a while and leads the film up so many cul-de-sacs its not surprising that it’s taken three instalments to reach its rather unsatisfactory conclusion. Or am I being naïve? (they’ve got me at it) and was that the point?

Anyway this is a mediocre film. The action sequences are impressive but strangely un-involving while the stoic element of the characterisation means the actors have little to do but say their lines with as deadpan an expression as possible. With Keanu Reeves this is an advantage, but it’s a waste of Fishbourne and Moss. Hugo Weaving does get to ham it up a bit as Agent Smith which adds to the entertainment.

I got the feeling that we haven’t seen the last of this franchise but after this I feel it’s definitely run its course.

The first film was terrific but after that you get the feeling the only question anyone involved with this was really asking was how long can we spin it out for? Time for the Matrix to be unplugged. Permanently.
