This film, is about 2 gay men who meet at Cambridge University and engage in an exploration of their sexuality with eachother despite the fact that homosexuality is illegal in 1900s England.
Maurice (Wilby) Clive (Grant), are initially happy quietly relating to eachother, but their peace is disturbed when a mutual friend of theirs is arrested and then sentenced to prison with hard labour for trying to pick up a soldier at a pub - who turns out to be an undercover police officer!
Both men question what they are doing and why and decide to deal with their situation in different ways. Clive, by getting married to a woman that he obviously doesn't love, and Maurice by starting a new relationship with a rather rough and ready tradesman - making for a very emotional and bittersweet climax to the film.
If you want to get a snapshot of the sexual history of this country with all its predjudices and social barriers on show, then this film is a must see!
