Novelist-playwright-comedian-screenwriter-television writer Ben Elton (THE YOUNG ONES, BLACKADDER) tries his busy hand at directing with MAYBE BABY, a short, sweet romantic comedy about a couple very much in love but having difficulty conceiving a child. Hugh Laurie (Sam) and Joely Richardson (Lucy) are perfect as the struggling couple. Sam works for the BBC, where his new young boss shoves mottoes and buzzwords down his employees' throats. (One of the best is "Stay on message.") Sam and Lucy try anything and everything to conceive, reading books, following quack advice, using special massage oils, and seeing doctor after doctor to determine what the problem is. An aspiring writer, Sam has been looking for just the right story. When he suggests to Lucy (who keeps track of all of her thoughts and emotions in her diary) that he write about their struggles trying to have a baby, Lucy is furious that he would even consider making light of their personal relationship. But when he goes ahead and does it anyway--without her knowledge--their love is tested in more ways than one. Elton's witty debut film also features small parts played by such British stars as Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson, Dawn French, and Joanna Lumley.

For his debut as writer/director, Ben Elton tries — and fails — to step into the winning comedy shoes of erstwhile Black Adder partner Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill). Revolving around Hugh Laurie and Joely Richardson's attempts to have a child, this clichéd, caricatured and dreadfully acted tale has all the wit, sparkle and profundity of a 1970s Confessions movie. Despite good intentions, the unbelievable story resembles a bad sitcom, wrapped up with a huge sentimental ribbon. Elton's direction is bland and colourless, and even gratuitous cameos from chums Rowan Atkinson, Emma Thompson and Dawn French fail to disperse the pungent odour of turkey.
A self-regarding comedy, since our hero is writing the script of the film we are watching and it is, we are told, brilliant; it doesn't live up to this word-of-mouth, but it may amuse in an idle moment.
I was actually quite reluctant to watch this as I thought it would not be any good, and I dont mind admitting that I was wrong. Its a quiet little gem, well acted, quite a bit of fun, and has some very pertinent points to raise about a subject that most of us hope never to encounter.
Its a good british movie, well acted by all the cast especially Joely Richardson who has done a very good job. It has a simple, heartwarming story made a bit comical.I really enjoyed watching it.
The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe received a royal premiere in London last night at the Royal Albert Hall. The tale of four children who find themselves in the magical world of Narnia was watched by a host of stars with the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, who met the cast. The biggest star of the film, alongside Aslan the lion, voiced by Liam Neeson, will be the White Witch, Tilda Swinton (Orlando, Vanilla Sky, Constantine). Swinton met the royal couple Read more
