A well-made drama based on the life of the professional British criminal John McVicar, and based on his autobiography. Starring Roger Daltrey as the eponymous anti-hero, MCVICAR realistically depicts many of the often shocking and brutal aspects of prison life, and his eventual rehabilitation. PORRIDGE this ain't. This is an ill-conceived account, based on his autobiography, of folk hero John McVicar's escape from Durham prison. The Who's Roger Daltrey was one of the producers and the band had a hand in the noisy, inappropriate rock score. Daltrey also attempts the role of McVicar, while another pop singer, Adam Faith, plays his mate Walter. Tom Clegg directs it all in slam-bang Sweeney style. You can't help feeling that British producers should leave jail-break adventures to the Yanks. It might have been a lot more interesting to learn how McVicar came to gain his BSc in the clink (this is merely a revelation in the film's end credits).
Despite the excellent teamwork of Daltrey and Faith, a cracking cast, and inspiring raw material, this musical version... read more on Time Out
Some smart sequences don't prevent this from being an exploitation item.
QUITE SIMPLY A CLASSIC,ROGER DALTREY, ADAM FAITH, STEVEN BERKOFF, BILLY MURRAY - WHAT A LINE UP
The critic obviously doesn't like this classic movie. The soundtrack is excellent and very apt for the movie . . powerful in a word .
It's always better to make up your own mind rather than accept the critics review . .most of the bad critics wouldn't know a good film if it smacked them in the face.
This is a good example of a hard hitting BRITISH crime movie that really works.Roger Daltry [ The Who and Tommy] is excellent in the title role with a great British supporting cast. Based on a true story it is quite violent in parts and would make a great evenings viewing in a double bill with the equally good BUSTER!
Great music and classic villian 70's actors.
This is based on a true story of John Mcvicar, and about his escape from prison.
Roger Daltry plays the leading part.
This film is very good, and violent at times.

i saw this film when it first came out loved it then still agreat film.realistic violance and swearing not done for efect good script.[ rock on ]great for a guys and girls get together film, taken with a curry and a 24 pack of larger.
Another cool British gangster flick, this one about John McVicar... Roger Daltrey is sound in the lead role, and there are some nail biting set pieces (the armed robbery, the tunneling out)... The only thing that kept pulling me out of the story, was the Who's soundtrack; One piece of their music (the armed robbery) fitted brilliantly coz it had no singing. The rest fitted like a glove on the head.
Great film and fantastic soundtrack.
Pretty violent, but not in the same way as another brilliant but disturbing film 'Scum'
Watch out though for the actor that plays Streaky Jeffries 'Matthew Scurfield' as the part he plays of the mentally disturbed inmate is fantastic.
Adam Faith as is very believable as Walter Probyn.
Watch this and enjoy it, I did!
Forgetting the glamorisation of being inside prison which Im sure is not quite how they portray the way they talk down to the "screws", this film is top notch in the best British cult films of all time.
There are some top "one liners" that the prisoners use that have been remembered over the years together with the Who's excellent soundtrack.
Daltrey, Berkoff and Faith really make this film the masterpiece that it is......one of my favourites for sure!
Can watch over and over again.
Classic brit flic not like the crap they put out today peters friend etc saw it when it first came out and its always worth throwing on when th lads are round 'tip it stokes tip it'see aint watched it for a long time but still know the lines
