Fresh Mediterranean air!By RustyT from Dorset , 26 Sep 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]Apologies: the character's names have slipped my mind: watch the film to find out!
I liked everything about this Second World War film: it was a well made film, well acted, beautifully exploiting the Mediterranean scenery. The Italian dialogue, as sub-titled, reflected real people in a potentially dangerous situation.
An Italian squad of nine soldiers occupies an apparently deserted Greek island. They could possibly be wiped out at any moment. Then they find a colony of Greek women and children hiding at the other end of the island.
A young woman steps out to announce that she is the local prostitute, and is prepared to trade. This seems to set relationships between the groups on a sensible footing. The Italians are not out for trouble, in fact they find their new surroundings very congenial, and the war becomes sidelined.
Stability is threatened somewhat when the lieutenant's batman begins to fall for the girl they're all sleeping with, and she for him - there's even a bit of violence!
You will note that (at least for now) all the actors are virtual unknowns, but the characters they play are well delineated, real and interesting. This film should give a lovely breath of fresh Mediterranean air.

Molto buono!By a customer from Billericay , 04 Oct 2008I found this film utterly charming and would definitely recommend it. It succeeded on a number of levels where Captain Corelli's Mandarin failed. The cast was excellent and the characters thoroughly convincing. The scenery was lovely. All in all a film which was easy to watch and enjoy. This film may be undemanding (as suggested by one of the other reviews), however, don't be fooled - there are a number of well-observed and subtle messages about human nature in here. Particularly the fundamentals of human nature (love, friendship etc) transcending over war.
Wish you were here?By a customer from Worcester , 09 Sep 2008Spend some time in the sun with this 2WW comedy/drama. This is good fun and enjoyable throughout. If your thinking of watching Captain Corelli's Mandolin then don't and watch this instead- no fake accents here. Indeed I think Louis de Bernieres must have viewed this a few times before writing his epic tale.
Nice, but slowBy a customer from London , 04 Sep 2008This was a slow movie but the characters were very interesting. People's view at 2. world war and their ignorance at what is happening all around the world were worth noting. It was also funny at certain times. Liked it.
capt corelli but not as good a storyBy a customer from Mauchline , 31 Aug 2008Nice escape to the Greek Isles. Very Capt. Corelli with less drama.
Great italian movieBy a customer from Cambridge , 05 Jul 2008A film that predates Capt. Corelli by a long shot and is so much better - funny, genuine, touching and full of small characterisations that are typical of italians and which parts of Italy they come from. Much funnier in the original (so much is lost in the translation), but the essence of the movie is still there.
