Fresh Mediterranean air!By RustyT from Dorset , 26 Sep 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]Apologies: the character's names have slipped my mind: watch the film to find out!
I liked everything about this Second World War film: it was a well made film, well acted, beautifully exploiting the Mediterranean scenery. The Italian dialogue, as sub-titled, reflected real people in a potentially dangerous situation.
An Italian squad of nine soldiers occupies an apparently deserted Greek island. They could possibly be wiped out at any moment. Then they find a colony of Greek women and children hiding at the other end of the island.
A young woman steps out to announce that she is the local prostitute, and is prepared to trade. This seems to set relationships between the groups on a sensible footing. The Italians are not out for trouble, in fact they find their new surroundings very congenial, and the war becomes sidelined.
Stability is threatened somewhat when the lieutenant's batman begins to fall for the girl they're all sleeping with, and she for him - there's even a bit of violence!
You will note that (at least for now) all the actors are virtual unknowns, but the characters they play are well delineated, real and interesting. This film should give a lovely breath of fresh Mediterranean air.

Blue HeavenBy a customer from London, England , 24 Aug 2007'Mediterraneo' is a superb feel-good movie. It is a warmly humorous experience. set within a remote little Greek island which a motley group of Italian soldiers are charged with occupying, The men settle down with no radio contact to island life entirely cut off from the war.
It's deeply romantic, warm and beautiful to look at.
captain corelli's mandolinBy a customer from brighton, uk , 28 Mar 2007marvellous fim deserving the awards. took me back to reading 'corelli' - so not at all like the nicholas cage debacle. this is a lovely watch... no it's better than that.
Simple uncomplicated story.By a customer from Chorley, England , 28 Feb 2006Beautiful scenery and an uncomplicated life (although taking place during the second world war).
I enjoyed the film and, as I am presently learning Italian, the dialogue was useful and not too complicated!

Nice film, but Oscar winner?By Andy Oliver from Colchester, England , 22 Jan 2006Saw Mediterraneo many years ago and remembered it with quite a bit of affection. Unfortunately it's not quite the great movie I remember, it's still a nice and beautifully shot little film, just nothing really special. Ideal for a quiet night in with a nice bottle of wine, Mediterraneo is undemanding and quaint and there's little wrong with that.
