This portrayal of a perfect American family was too sugary for some critical tastes at the time, but it can be viewed today as a vintage MGM musical. Whatever the film's minor flaws, they are more than made up for by some dazzling musical numbers — such as Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, The Trolley Song and Skip to My Lou — enhanced by the masterly direction of Vincente Minnelli at the top of his form. Providing a romanticised but still uplifting depiction of life in St Louis at the beginning of the 20th century, with Mary Astor as mom and Judy Garland as one of four daughters, this is a tale that only works against the backdrop of a more innocent age. It's delightful, and too good to miss.

Patchy but generally highly agreeable musical nostalgia with an effective sense of the passing years and seasons.

Fantastic Musical for all the family

What a fabulous film this is with a great story and cast. Lots of catchy songs which you'll probably recognise. There are some good special features on the DVD that are worth watching too.

    Velvet & Tinsel

A star vehicle for the great Judy Garland directed by hubby Vincente Minelli with a family group of intelligent, competent actors. Leon Ames and Mary Astor as the parents Margaret O'Brien, one of the best juvenile actors ever, as sister Tootie and the lovely Lucille Bremer as an older sister. Tom Drake as the boy next door. Comedy from Harry Davenport, Marjorie Maine and Chill Wills and a plethora of memorable songs such as 'The Trolley Song' (Oscar nomination) 'Meet Me in St Louis', 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' and 'The Boy Next Door'. A feel good film always worth another look.

The Wizard Of Oz has been named the best ever family film in a top 50 drawn up by the Guardian. The list will no doubt cause some controversy but the task of picking the best films suitable for the whole family, not just children, is no mean feat. Behind Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, and her dog Toto's adventure over the rainbow was Frank Capra's It's A Wonderful Life. The moving tale of James Stewart's character saved from suicide by a trainee guardian angel is not just a top family film or Read more
