Woody Allen mixes the tragic with the comic in Melinda And Melinda, a delightful, intelligent look at two versions of the same story.

Still the same old story...By bgarcez from United Kingdom , 03 Apr 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]They're rich, live in the best spots of Manhattan, go to nice restaurants and drink good wine on a regular basis, yet they manage to carry a bagfull of neurosis, phobias, suicidal tendencies and complexes.
It's Woody, once again, recycling himself.
If his intent was to balance a comical story with a tragical one, he's done it way better in Crimes and Misdemeanors. This one lacks that same bittersweet touch.
You've seen it all before. With the difference that there was a time in which you still laughed about the seductress that ends up to be a nutter or the husband that falls in love with the next door neighbour and so generates a series of would be laughable gags.
There was once a filmaker who managed to reinvent himself in each movie. I'm talking about the guy who made Zelig, Annie Hall and The Purple Rose of Cairo.
The author of Melinda and Melinda just looks like a pale imitation of the Woody from those days.

Try itBy cshields (13 reviews) from Woking , 19 Feb 2009A novel twist that kept me watching.
I would watch it again.
Woody Allen's Melinda and MelindaBy a customer from Manchester , 05 Feb 2009I have always liked Woody Allen and I liked the quirky, breathless conversations of the aspiring actors, directors etc in large apartments. The two alternating stories both based on the anecdote of one screenwriter to two others are touching and quite realistic, though at first ti was rather confusing to be thrust from one scenario to the other. The same types of character and motifs recurred in both stories. Eventually both came to ther close, one tragic adn one comic, the two writers concurring that life is what you make of it. Enjoyable!
Can I suggest an alternative?By a customer from Bromley , 30 Dec 2008No wonder you can buy this so cheaply from Amazon! One part of the movie is supposedly told as tragedy, the other as comedy. I really could not tell which was which. There was a joke at the 20 minute point but I gave up waiting for anything of value thereafter & sent the movie back. Thank goodness for DVD rental. I was particularly disappointed because I'd got the thing out to see the excellent Chiwetel Ejiofor in a half decent American film. Come back to Britain mate. The industry is always in terminal decline and the jobs few & far between - but we make movies like Chewie's 'Dirty Pretty Things'! If you haven't seen it, rent it today. Instead of New York self obsession you get a story of modern London that will entertain, prompt thought and leave you feeling good on every level. A story of the modern London under class pulling off this hat trick. Oh, yes!
Melinda an...z.zzzzzzzzzzzzzzBy MCFCBOLTON (15 reviews) from Bolton , 04 Sep 2008No, no, no, no,no........I love love film and when i find an actor I like, i put them in the search and then have a fest by watching all their films. This film was watched due to will ferrall. Sometimes cringy, but most times funny.
This was not funny. It is one of the lamest films i have ever had the misfortune to watch. Even will was as wishy washy as his character in this film.
Snails pace all the way through......and then stops........
Definate zero out of five.
Woody without woodyBy Stephikins (1 review) from Leeds , 03 Sep 2008This film has the script, but there is no Woody to delivery it and there are many flat moments. Will Farell does entice some out loud laughter, but most of actors just arn't interested enough- they need something about them to really bring the script to life-
Allan's later thriller work is a lot more striking, this seems to be a bit of an in between stage.
