As a big fan of the book I was really looking forward seeing M of a G on the big screen and I was not disappointed. Ok it changed the story slightly and gave it a "happy ending" and missed bits out but dont all films adapted from novels (especially american made films who tend to be heavy handed with the saccharine)? The film is beautiful, the scenery and sets are beautiful and the women are exquisitely beautiful.

For me the joy of this book is in the detail (eg the descriptions of the amazing and very expensive kimono and learning to play the samishen) and there was not enough of that in the film but thats just my thing and, I suppose, could have been boring on screen if not scripted/filmed sensitively and thoughtfully.

Go see this film and be transported to another world and time for a couple of hours and, if you havent already, read the book!!!!

A fisherman's daughter is 'sold' to a Geisha house and grows up to be the most celebrated of her kind. I thought this was going to be a vast and luminous eastern epic, but actually this movie version, though beautifully shot is mostly confined to the backstreets of pre-war Kyoto and the story is straight out of a Jane Austen book. Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh are a feast for the eyes, but the problem I had with it is the language. It would have been so much better in Japanese.

I read the book first too, and let me tell you that the film is a great compliment. It is one of the most beautiful, artistic films I have ever seen. It was a feast for the eyes. So beautiful and mesmerising. Saying that it doesn't stick to the book and so some people will be disappointed. My husband fell asleep after ten mins too. So, not everyones cup of green tea but certainly mine.

This film has some beautiful and inspirational scenes. I read the book and loved that and also enjoyed the film. If you haven't read the book I highly recommend it.

  • Graceful and aesthetically pleasing

The cinematography is exquisite and the pace gentle. The story is melancholic and contemplative in style - full of atmosphere. The different aspects come together well - music, costume, mise-en-scene. Over all very captivating. What bothers me about it though is that the aesthetics of the film prevent the gritty reality of the time, the conditions and the hardship from fully materialising on the screen. One is swept away in the gracefullness of the presentation which masks the discourses and ideologies that conditioned a world that was deeply exploitative. But the film is not a docu-drama and therefore should not be criticised too hard for its shortcomings in this regard. Nor would it be true that it does not acknowledge the reality of a Geisha's world; the voice over at the end does say, these are (after all) not the memoirs of an Empress or a queen, but those of another kind. All in all a very graceful movie worth watching if you appreciate subtelty, sumptuous design and an aesthetic lens (as opposed to a documentary lens or the tropes of an action or thriller genre).
