David Puttnam — here co-producing with Catherine Wyler, whose father, director William Wyler, made 1944's classic documentary of the same name — was the force behind this moving and nostalgic trip back to the Second World War that focuses on the crew members of a B-17 bomber who are bidding to complete their final mission. It's a bit too predictable — the usual will they make it back or not heroics — but the characters (slickly played by a strong cast that includes Matthew Modine and Eric Stoltz) are endearing and the crew's final flight is grippingly filmed. Most of the plaudits, though, must go to the stunning aerial effects and photography, and, of course, to the real heroes of this true-life story.

this is about the 5-6 time iv seen this film and it still does it for me,its the story of the crew of the Memphis belle and there final sortie into Germany.
its gripping from start to Finnish, it has great action and some nice flight scenes
We really enjoyed this - it has a slow beginning, concentrating on building up the characters and the reason for the film; it was filmed at Duxford in England, and is the story of the Memphis Belle, an American bomber completing her first tour of duty, the first US bomber to complete so many missions and not be shot down.
In fairness, it did not appeal to the 20 year old in the household ... us older (40/50 year olds) really enjoyed it.
It captured the wartime atmosphere extremely well and the photography was very good.
A very good film if you are interested in the life of a bomber cew during the second world war.
The Memphis belle was the first 8th air force crew to complete 25 missions but unlike the film the last mission for the real crew was to france on a 'milk run'
the film is based on events that happened during the 25 missions that she flew,so all the events did happen just not all at once
the cast play very good roles and do make you believe that you are watching a b 17 bomber crew.
The film used 7 B-17s for filming unfourtunatley one crashed towards the end of the film shoot,
for anybody wondering about the base it was filmed at duxford.
all in all a good enjoyable film, shows its age alittle now as the film itself is a little worn and special effects would be better today but all i all one to watch.
Very atmospheric - great care was taken when the film was made to make the aircraft seem as realistic as possible. The cast were well-suited to their roles. Funny scene with the tomato soup!!

If you enjoyed this film I would stongly suggest that you see Britain at War in Colour. Make sure it is the DVD version because one of the extras is a documentary on the real Memphis Belle. You will then compare the real version with the screen version.
I watched it when i was young and enjoyed it still brill now
I remember watching this film at the cinema and totally enjoying it. Although it?s been shown on TV a few times as well, I never get bored watching it. I think it?s the last time eight airworthy B17?s have flown together, which is just great to watch. Overall a great firm without the CGI that is in almost every new film today.
One of the best world war 2 films I and many others have seen!! can't get any better than this.
This film is based on a true story, however if you see the documentary of the Memphis Belle you will see events potrayed in the film are much more dramatic than the reality. Having said that this film is suberb and captures the tensions faced by bomber crews. Certainly one of the best war films made and a film I never tire of seeing.
I've probably seen it a hundred times before, but it never loses its magic. An all time feel good movie!

Sentimental drama that is a throwback to war films of an earlier era.
