Although several of Chabrol's films are descibed as paying homage to Hitchcock I find that I'm always disappointed ( for example, Le Boucher) and this film is no exception. While Chabrol may have been an admirer of the great Alfred he never seems to me to match his ability to create and maintain suspense. This film began intriguingly and for the first hour I was quite hooked and looking forward to a dramatic twist but alas it never came and I was left not only disappointed but baffled at the motivation of the main protagonists. Perhaps I didn't appreciate Chabrol's sense of social satire. I expected an exciting suspenseful thriller. Sadly I was left unfulfilled..
