At last!!! We CAN do it!
By MickeyMouse3000 (299 reviews) from Dorset, England , 02 Jan 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
I was beginning to believe it would never happen ever again. But against all odds, after what seems like an eternity, we - the british television industry - have finally managed to create a bloody good series! Goodbye Doctor Who-the-hell-watches-this-crap?! Move over Torchwood! It's actually time for a good series. Merlin is not only great fun with likeable characters and entertaining stories, it also (most of the time) has really good acting in it, especially from Anthony Head who always seems to deliver well in whatever he does. Yes, it still has the odd low-budget naff bit in it and of course it's still a mile off competeing with the american shows, but it is still british after all. Perfect or not, it's a great fantasy / drama series - the effects are good enough and there's actually some impressive fightscenes (no, I wouldn't have believed it either), the actors are well-cast (the guy who plays Merlin suits the part perfectly) and it manages emotional, touching drama without everyone just screaming their lungs out at each other, which is something quite rare for british television. There are some really memorable moments in the series and the stories and script are top-notch with some surprisingly clever twists and sharp dialogue. I don't know how accurately it follows the old myths and frankly I don't care. Overall, I loved it and very much look forward to it's return. To all who made this show - keep up the long-awaited good work.- Was this review helpful to you?

(13)Wonderful - when you suspend your disbelief!
By Eskdaleman (14 reviews) , 10 Sep 2012Those who know the legend of Arthur as it has been told over the centuries are sometimes dismayed by modern enactments because they are usually wrongly set in medieval times. But as the original itself is a tale of events and characters that cannot be proved to have much historical fact a re-inventing is justified and very welcome. Especially when it is done so incredibly well as in this series. Placing Merlin and Arthur at the same age is a bold move, but it works so well as both actors spark off each other and create that chemistry which brings their characters alive. I have just watched the episode 'La Morte D'Arthur' (next disc) and one cannot hep but suspend any disbelief and be drawn into the atmosphere of the drama as it unfolds with full emotional impact. Can one remain dry-eyed when Merlin says Goodbye to Arthur? The whole series so far is blessed by superb acting; and the directing, sets and the post production are of such a high standard that this re-boot of the legend is destined to become a classic in its own right. But now for the down side: I'm afraid that in the commentaries the often silly, childish comments from the younger actors tend to spoil and play down not only their own undoubted talent but also, unfortunately, that of the director and all those other real artists involved in the wardrobe, lighting, camera work, studio mock-ups and CGI. Sometimes the participants in these commentaries have never even watched the scene they are prattling on about. A pity. They do themselves and others an injustice. It might be better to leave out listening to the commentaries except for the redeeming fact they do reveal the superb work of all the crew involved in the production.- Was this review helpful to you?

Merlin Series 1
By a customer from WARWICKSHIRE , 28 Apr 2010Such a well filmed production, great cast and stories that are compelling but dont take themselves too seriously so good all round family entertainment.
Took advice from other reviewers and did not hire bonus disc, as it would have wasted a credit, but other discs contain extras like audio commentary from cast which if you like this kind of thing gives you lots of insider info.- Was this review helpful to you?
