    disappointing

As a huge fan of Alan Rickman, I have been wanting to see this film for years. Apart from the difficulty in hearing some of the characters' lines (especially Rickman's), I was disappointed in what could have been a fantastic film. Alan Rickman was very good in it, as usual, but I felt that the script was poor. Dr Anton Mesmer appears to have been a fascinating person. After doing a little research, I discovered that there was so much more to him than presented in this film. The basis for a truly engaging and enlightening story is there, especially now when holistic treatments and therapies for illness are on the rise (as Mesmer practiced over 200 years ago). The quaility of the acting was generally very good and many scenes were sumptuously filmed, so I am somewhat surprised that the script differed so widely in quality from the rest of the film. Overall, worth seeing for Alan Rickman alone if you're a fan. If not, I'm not certain I'd pay to see it.
