    disappointing

As a huge fan of Alan Rickman, I have been wanting to see this film for years. Apart from the difficulty in hearing some of the characters' lines (especially Rickman's), I was disappointed in what could have been a fantastic film. Alan Rickman was very good in it, as usual, but I felt that the script was poor. Dr Anton Mesmer appears to have been a fascinating person. After doing a little research, I discovered that there was so much more to him than presented in this film. The basis for a truly engaging and enlightening story is there, especially now when holistic treatments and therapies for illness are on the rise (as Mesmer practiced over 200 years ago). The quaility of the acting was generally very good and many scenes were sumptuously filmed, so I am somewhat surprised that the script differed so widely in quality from the rest of the film. Overall, worth seeing for Alan Rickman alone if you're a fan. If not, I'm not certain I'd pay to see it.

I would very much like to review this film, but I am deaf and there were no subtitles so I am unable to.

No film without subtitles deserves more than 1 star from me. It is a disgrace that so many are still without them,

    Great Alan Rickman

This is an average movie with great Alan Rickman. The plot is rather dubious, and the personage is not too remarkable, despite the 'mystical' power, which seems to be fake. But watching Mr Rickman is pleasure, he is a great cinema personality, and in 1994, when the film was shot, he is on the peak of his form.

Notice the kiss episode: it tells lots about the character, beautiful scene.

    Mesmerising! For about 30 seconds...

I greatly anticipated this film, being a Rickman fan and also being genuinely interested in the outlined story.

Unfortunately i was not impressed. Not only were most of the lines inaudible due to poor sound quality, but i found that the pace of the film was too slow.

Suprisingly, i didn't like Mr Rickman's performance in this film, however his voice was perfect for the film- hypnotic and drawling.

The performance was extremely similar to Rickmans portrayal of Grigori Rasputin, but without all the sex.

Not really worth a view. See 'Rasputin' instead.

    Appalling

One of the worst films I have seen in a very long time, which is a shame since Alan Rickman is one of my favourite actors. After the first five minutes of excruciatingly painful dialogue and mental moaning, I hit the fast forward, then switched it off.

    Not Mesmer-ising

Even the talented Alan Rickman cannot save this dire docu-drama. It moves slowly and painfully to no particular conclusion, give it a miss!

I thought this would be good - but you know what thought did. It was slow, no obvious plot and -well just don't bother

    No No No

As a lover of films both biographical and period I couldn't wait to watch this film. What a waste of a rental. Its rare I give in and turn off before the end but this one got 25 minutes. Even the talented Mr Rickman couldn't save this one. Avoid at all costs.

    major disappointment

This was a bad costume drama with even worse script. I was expecting something much better from Alan Rickman.
