Messa Per Rossini/In Search Of The Messa Per Rossini
Soon after Rossini's death in 1868, Giuseppe Verdi came up with a fitting tribute to his musical hero. He proposed that 13 Italian composers should each contribute a movement, free of charge, to a requiem in Rossini's honour. It was to be performed on the anniversary of Rossini's death in the church of San Petronio in Bologna. However, the political and cultural climate in the newly-unified Italy led to the project being abandoned indefinitely. The 'Messa per Rossini' finally received its long-awaited world premiere in 1988 at the European Music Festival in Stuttgart. A recording of the event, which took place at the Evangelische Stadtkirche in Ellwangen, Wurttemberg, is presented here, along with the documentary IN SEARCH OF THE MESSA PER ROSSINI. Shot in Germany and Italy, the film follows the troubled creation of the 'Messa per Rossini' and Verdi's noble efforts to immortalize the memory of the man he so revered.
