On the face of it this metal missive is a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Metallica’s ‘St. Anger’ album in 2003, but something seems to ‘go off the rails’ and it becomes a quite different proposition. Fans of Spinal Tap may wonder if it is a set up; fans of ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ will DEFINITELY be wondering if SKOM is a set up, but whatever the case it is riveting viewing for music fans and documentary fans alike, I don’t think you need to be a Metalli-cat to enjoy it, but I dare say you would get even more from it if you were, then again if you are you’ve probably seen it already. SKOM serves as a potted history as well, taking the viewer from Day 1 to 2003/04. There’s more to the film than egos locking horns (okay, egos probably don’t have horns) across the mixing desk, the practice room, the studio, etc. It’s all about the Het and Lars Ulrich, new bassist Robert Trujillo doesn’t really feature until the end, and guitarist Kirk Hammett is pretty much a bystander, doing what little he can to try and hold things together. Interesting viewing - essential if you’re a fan.
