On the face of it this metal missive is a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of Metallicas St. Anger album in 2003, but something seems to go off the rails and it becomes a quite different proposition. Fans of Spinal Tap may wonder if it is a set up; fans of Exit Through The Gift Shop will DEFINITELY be wondering if SKOM is a set up, but whatever the case it is riveting viewing for music fans and documentary fans alike, I dont think you need to be a Metalli-cat to enjoy it, but I dare say you would get even more from it if you were, then again if you are youve probably seen it already. SKOM serves as a potted history as well, taking the viewer from Day 1 to 2003/04. Theres more to the film than egos locking horns (okay, egos probably dont have horns) across the mixing desk, the practice room, the studio, etc. Its all about the Het and Lars Ulrich, new bassist Robert Trujillo doesnt really feature until the end, and guitarist Kirk Hammett is pretty much a bystander, doing what little he can to try and hold things together. Interesting viewing - essential if youre a fan.
