Following the goofy slapstick of The Nutty Professor, Eddie Murphy returned to the genre that made him a star with this misfiring action vehicle. It has a harder centre than usual as hostage negotiator Murphy uses his motormouth talents to haggle with hostage takers. However, his persuasive charms are sorely tested when he comes up against psychotic jewel thief Michael Wincott, who remains unconvinced that it is good to talk. The highlight set piece is a car chase involving a runaway tram, but otherwise director Thomas Carter, who cut his teeth on TV series such as Remington Steele and Midnight Caller, displays little flair in the action department. Beverly Hills Cop was more fun.
Murphy returns to familiar ground, as a smart, wise-cracking cop, but the style has worn thin through overuse; cast and director go through their predictable motions in an efficient but uninspired manner.
I enjoyed this San Francisco version of 'Beverley Hills Cop' where Eddie Murphy's best mate gets slaughtered by the otherwise intelligent and intellectual Michael Wincott.
There then follows a series of chases and shoot outs to rival most of the standard police potboilers.
I had not seen this film since it was on the screen in 1997 and it came up on the Tesco recommended viewing for my profile.
Well done Tesco, you were on the button as I enjoyed the film immensely, it was plausible without taking itself too seriously and Murphy was cheeky but controlled.
Good stunts and believable if you do not look too closely with a cracking ending when they all get their just desserts.
Worth the money, especially as I do not have find space on the shelf, I can just post it back.
Michael Wincott always makes for an amusing villain, and his voice is perfect for the role of a villain, hence me watching this. I wasn't paying attention when choosing this, else I'd have realised that Eddie Murphy is in it, too. Still, despite it being later in Murphy's career, it's a surprisingly adequate film. It's a thriller, with a plot not entirely divorced from that of Nighthawks, with Murphy in the Stallone role. The difference is, Metro is fun to watch. It's not a comedy vehicle for Murphy, although he is given some rein to play up the 'brother' stereotype so beloved of movies featuring black people. All-in-all, it's a fun, entertaining flick. Switch off your brain, tuck in to some popcorn, and enjoy.
