  • A visionary sci-fi epic

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Fritz Lang's dazzling film still has the power to amaze after over 75 years. Unfortunately, over a quarter of the film remains lost but this superb DVD offers the most complete version that will probably ever be seen.

The central story follows the son of the city's ruler who, angered by his father's brutality, joins the workers below the city to help start an uprising. The story, however, is secondary to the film's incredible imagery. The still impressive effects and ambitious set design make this a must-see.

Metropolis has provided the blueprint for practically any modern science fiction you can name. Though few, if any, can match it's incredible scope and impact.

Aspect ratio is all wrong, cutting dialogue and heads off all over the place, really needs sorting out! It would be in inappropriate to attempt to review it so my rating is for the print only.

Can you reupload this film please Love Film - WITHOUT chopping all the heads off the actors! Ridiculous. Whoever did this is a moron.

  • Avoid the 'Instant' version

The streamed 'Instant' version of this movie is unwatchable. Who on earth oversaw the transfer / import? I can only assume it's someone with limited visual capabilites... The actors heads are chopped off and the on-screen text is often partially out of shot. Awful... I shall rent the DVD version in the hope I shall get to see this much-hype film at last

Honestly, I couldn't watch this film, even though I know it's reputation as one of the seminal films of C20. I'd glimpsed a few of the reviews and noted a few complaints about the soundtrack not been the original and not very good; that is an understatement - its awful. Could somebody please write a new score - Kraftwerk maybe? It doesn't have to be all plinkety plonk buster keaton pianos (I'd prefer that to the current offering) but it at least it needs to fit the mood of the film. You don't think music affects a film that much, and then you realise it absolutely does. As for the film itself - I'll keep looking at my 'Life in the Air Age' album in wonder until I get to see it in its full glory.

  • Bad transfer

“Metropolis” is so much part of our cultural lexicon now – the futuristic sets, the female robot, Queen rock videos – the actual act of watching the film itself is curiously unengaging. This is mainly down to some severe overacting (always something to be wary of in silent movies but particularly sidetracking here) and Lang’s overawed use of his enormous sets and cast of thousands. It is however intriguing from a historical point of view. What 1927 German audiences must have made of its tale of oppressed workers rising up at a time when Hitler was cultivating the masses is probably its chief fascination. Avoid the Instant streaming version. It's obviously lifted from one of the numerous incarnations of the film and it's not a good one. Half the time the actors heads are clipped out of frame.
