Whit Stillman's droll, razor sharp romantic comedy set amongst the Manhattan socialite scene is a timeless, sparkling reminder of the emerging independent film landscape of the late 1980s and early 1990s. 'Not so long ago' lives a young man called Tom Townsend. Tom opposes the young, self-styled 'urban haute bourgeoisie' and the vulgar socialising they represent but is coerced into accompanying the dowdy Audrey for the "Sally Fowler Rat Pack's" Christmas season. The Pack's outspoken members Charlie, Nick and Cynthia cynically debate art, politics, social criticism, activism and literature as Tom's suspicions are confirmed. He becomes immersed in the caustic, witty and urbane barbs and ticks that exist amongst this conspicuous peer group. Worse still, Tom has unwittingly been brought back into the social sphere of Serena Slocum, the bewitching breaker of many an innocent young boy's heart and for whom Tom still carries a flaming torch.

a bit boring
Interesting character sketches, but more like a play than a film. Gives you an idea of wealthy NY university age kids winter break at home in Manhattan. ... read more »
