Came back from seeing Michael Ball in concert at Harewood House and just had to see a DVD of him in concert to savour the moment again. I wasn't disappointed by this concert.
This DVD is excellent. The documentary is good - it gives a nice "behind the scenes" look at putting a tour on the road. Michael is just so nice to all those around him. The concert is great. The sound, the filming and song choices are all excellent.
Curl up on the sofa girls, get a few friends round and enjoy!
I was a HUGE Michael Ball fan when I was like 15-16 years old (it developed from a passion for musical theatre), but at that age, I wasn't really confident to go to a concert on my own. So sadly I've never seen him live...
Eventually I discovered other acts more tailored to my age (22) like Josh Groban and Michael Buble, so my interest in Ball waned. Frankly, now I find him cheesy and only good for making 50 year old women swoon at his curly hair and dimples.
Yes, he is naturally a very good singer, but compared to the professionally trained performers out there these days, you can see how vocally lazy Ball is. As I watched this DVD I just kept wanting to screen 'enunciate damnit!' all the way through. He has an incredible natural gift, but lacks the proper training to be truely outstanding.
This show is typical Michael Ball fare. Perfectly enjoyable, but very... middle aged.
This was filmed 6 years ago now, and you can tell. It feels quite dated now.
Michael Ball needs to stop with the concert tours and go back to the West End and Broadway. That's where he REALLY shines.
