Porn business - without the filthBy Gkeaney (89 reviews) from London , 01 Aug 2011Pretty interesting story, and fairly tame considering this is a film about the rise of internet porn! It was much more engaging that I expected it to be, expecting a comedy but was pleasantly surprised to find it went much deeper and does develop the characters whilst shying away from the actual porn side of the story.
The cast are all good, once again this shows Luke Wilson deserves to be at the same level as his brother, at the very least. Problem for me was it covers a large era, and seems to ignore a good few years, we just sort of find ourselves in the present and no doubt much could have happened. This is how it reminded me of other rise to power films outside of the usual gangster offering, like Blow and Lord of War. Also the key piece of development that allowed the growth of this industry is severely overlooked, putting the material online was not the impressive part it was how they get money from subscriptions.
Whilst there is nothing wrong with this film, it could have been so much more. I assume with a bigger name involved this may have got the budget and runtime it deserved to produce a much superior movie. Unfortunately it now seems this film will struggle to gain an audience, which would be a shame since it is worth a rent.
Please know this is not going to be so much a comedy (even though it says it is) and as such wont have much sex/nudity. If you rent the title with this in mind you should find it enjoyable enough.
A fun (and fairly clean) look at internet porn.By Electra18 (6 reviews) from London , 30 Jul 2011When I heard this film was basically about the inception of porn on the internet I was expecting some pretty seedy, especially with it's 18 rating. I was surprised however, it was neither seedy nor preachy in terms of it's message to the audience. It is a straight-forward telling of the events of the mid 90's when the internet was in it's 'dial-up' infancy and when mega bucks could be made very quickly. It does sag in the middle quite badly, and doesn't carry through the comedic or dramatic promise it showed to begin with. Luke Wilson's clean, family man comes across as bland instead of morally tormented. Giovanni Ribsi and Gabriel Macht start off by having the most fun with thier charaters only for them to be sidelined midway through. Still, Macht gets the best line in the movie which involves a sex act and whistling. I'd say, above average but could have followed through better.
Great script but..By Joe77 (9 reviews) from Wembley , 30 Jul 2011The concept and script were great, the film just didn't fully deliver. The start of the film and the story are both funny and interesting though. Some people may enjoy it, and I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it at times but the movie as a whole is not very good
