A pale reflection of its predecessor, Bullet to Beijing, but still worth seeing if you like the actors and the atmosphere of post-communist Russia.

Great photography, gave a real feeling of the city during that period. Wonderful buildings etc. Acting did not build any tension and was, on occasions pretty wooden using the generic 'russian accents' from drama school.

Michael Caine earned a few bob, I guess, but I can't fathom why he should have made this film otherwise....

  • solid rather than exciting

OK. I would recommend this to you. Solid performance from Michael Caine, and by and large well supported by the rest of the cast. The music score, by Rick Wakeman, is excellent throughout, apart from one particular point, a chase scene, where it is inappropriate to the action - rather like a 1970's film score. The acting is a bit wooden at times - possibly inspired by the dialogue which, again, at times seems very 1970s.

Jason Connery? Well, suffice to say that as yet he does not have the charisma, the inherent presence, of his dad. And his hair is seldom even remotely out of place.

The background of St Petersburgh is first class, and now and then stunning, and lends a very good atmosphere to the entire film.

    Worth it? Yes

When Tesco asked me to write a review of Midnight In St Petersburg I had to ask my wife to remind me what the film was about. The only thing she could remember about the film was that I had remarked at the time that we were watching the film was that I didn't think much of it. Therefore as a fan of Michael Caine and the Harry Palmer movies I can only say that this film left no impression on me what so ever after watching it only a week before.
