This is a 1949 take on the 'King Kong' scenario, fast-moving and entertaining, but lacking a dimension because the ape is given little dignity, becoming ever more cartoon-like as the film progresses, and Ben Johnson is wasted in an 'aw shucks' role. The events of the ending, ushered in without preamble and filmed in a sort of red wash, were surprising. Better, as has been said, than the re-make, always interesting to see Harryhausen at work, but it's no 'King Kong'.
