Mike Oldfield's only appearance to date at the Montreux Festival was during the 1981 European tour in support of his album "QE2". The set featured songs from that album, its predecessor "Platinum" and versions of his classic seventies albums "Ommadawn" and of course "Tubular Bells". Performed by a tight knit group featuring two percussionist's, a bass player, a keyboardist and Maggie Reilly on vocals, the concert captures the real spirit of Oldfield's music.

I won't go on at length. If you have any worries about it being a cheap tatty DVD, know that it looks and sounds great and is a super snapshot of the Mike Oldfield Group in action, including Tim Cross's superb 'keyboard' shirt.
Casuals beware that, it being an early eighties show, it concentrates heavily on the then recent releases, Platinum (a superb high speed version thereof) and selections from QE2. Tubular Bells is featured, but it's very far from being the centrepiece of the show.
If you are more invested in the Oldfield canon, though, hearing he and his band attack (and improve) the QE2 material really brings a smile to the face. Hergest Ridge is unrepresented, as is Incantations (apart from a couple of appearances of the riff that also formed the basis of Guilty), but it's still a full show and well worth seeing. And in these days of fake digital perfection, it's nice to see someone let a few human errors in playing through their quality control.
