    AKA Shanghai Express

Sammo Hung's 1986 star filled and heavily plotted action comedy Eastern Western is a pleasure from start to finish. The slapstick style is a tribute to the crazy Hollywood movies of the thirties with an Asain twist. The action sequences are all first rate with a mix of well choreographed Kung Fu mixed in with some breathtaking stunts.

Sammo plays a small time con man trying to get the Shanghai Express to stop at his little town to improve business for the locals. Unknown to him there are Gangsters on board plus some Japanese trying to steal some National Treasures. It is, however Yuen Biao who gets to carry the film along with Sammo as the new law in town.

Yuen gets to do a cartwheel off a three story building on fire, lands on his feet and walks away, all in one continuous shot. Incredible! This is just one almost throw away moment in a film that has so much going on you need to view it more than once just to take it all in.

This is another jewel in Sammo's extremely sparkling crown. Not to be missed if you are a fan of this genre.

    2 GENERATIONS LAUGHING TOGETHER

I watched this film with my 20 year old daughter and 16 year old son and we all found it very amusing. A mix of Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and could be an influence on Tarantino's Kill Bill.

    AKA Shanghai Express

Sammo Hung's 1986 star filled and heavily plotted action comedy Eastern Western is a pleasure from start to finish. The slap-stick style is a tribute to the crazy Hollywood comedies of the 30's with an Asian twist. The action set pieces are all fist rate with a mix of well choreographed Kung Fu action mixed with some breathtaking stunts.

Sammo plays a small time con-man trying to get the Shanghai Express to stop at his little town to bring in more cash. Unknown to him there are gangsters on board, plus a gang of bandits have also got their sights on the train. It is however, Yuen Biao who gets to carry the film with Sammo as the new law in town.

Yuen gets to do a cartwheel off a three story building on fire, lands on his feet and walk away, all in one continuous shot. Incredible! This is just one, almost throw away moment in a film where so much is going on you need to watch more than once to take it all in.

Also amongst the cast are Eric Tsang, Rosamund Kwan, Richard Norton, Cynthia Rothrock, Hwang Jang Lee and regular fighting villian in Hong Kong action films, Dick Wei. Dick's fight with Yuen Biao in the amazing finale is one of the best ever filmed. This is truely an international cast.

This is another jewel in Sammo Hung's extremely sparkling crown. This is another gem, not to be missed.

You wont feel like a million dollars...

A who's who of martial arts cinema, Sammo Hung's latest Hong Kong Legends release is an aquired taste if indeed nothing else.

Falling in to the 'Lucky Stars' school of action comedy, Martial arts spectacle takes a backseat to the quirky, offbeat and actually not that funny brand of humour that Hong Kong basqued in throughout the Nineteen eighties.

It's all good fun.. up to a point.

But for well over an hour it is fair to say that martial arts fans have very little to saviour. It all feels like such a waste of talent. Eastern humour is all well and good, but please, when i watch the likes of Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao on screen together it's the action scenes and stunts that are going to hold my attention. They do come... Eventually. They are worth waiting for... Kind of. But the whole experience feels like such a waste of opportunity.

Ten minutes of action do not a good movie make. If goofy comedy is your thing then great, personally i felt like watching Project A again just to redeem my faith in action cinema.

    No Jackie Required...

An all-star cast brought together by Sammo

    - you can't go wrong. It has ambitions beyonds its limitations and once again we're treated to some boistrous canto-comedy which sometimes falls a little flat but lets be honest if you've come for the fights and stunts you will not be disapointed. Look out for the great Kwan Tak Hing appearing as Wong Fei Hung for the 71st time...beautiful anamorphic print with excellent sound (even the english dub works well)
