When a cockroach-spread plague threatens to decimate the child population of New York City, evolutionary biologist Susan Tyler and her research associates rig up a species of "Judas" bugs and introduce them into the environment, where they will "mimic" the diseased roaches and infiltrate their grubby habitats. So far so good...until the bugs keep on evolving and learn to mimic their next prey--humans. Noirish, dazzling production work ensconces reliably creepy bug-related thrills. Based on the short story by Donald A. Wolheim.

In the same vein as The Relic and all those other movies about creepy-crawlies that go crunch in the night, this horror movie stars Mira Sorvino as an entomologist determined to find out exactly what has invaded the New York subway system. It's preposterous stuff, but the tale of oversized insects (a genetically enhanced species developed to eradicate an epidemic-spreading breed of cockroaches) is suitably gruesome and atmospheric thanks to Cronos director Guillermo del Toro's dark direction. Sorvino is believably tough, too, and smartly supported by Jeremy Northam, Charles S Dutton and Josh Brolin as potential monster munchies.
Effective and atmospheric horror movie, with much of the action taking place in subway tunnels; its visual style creates unease without resorting to shock effects.
I'd like to be more contructive but, what a pile of cr#p!! Don't put your self through it. I watched it upto the point in which a human/cockroach man turned up......

Del Toro, whose other directing credits include Hellboy, Blade II and Mimic, is reportedly a frontrunner because of his deep love for Tolkien's work and his track record with... Read more
