Minority Report

Question: Can you make a bad film of a Philip K Dick story? In some ways, Spielberg seems to have tried, but ultimately fails as the quality of the ideas shines through. Yes, the jet pack chase scenes are ridiculous. Yes, Tom Cruise is at his one dimensional worst (though still watchable). Yes, the idea of seeing the future is silly (but not as silly as the plant lady, 'discoverer' of the pre-cogs). But somehow the film is much more than the sum of its parts and is worth a view. For anyone interested in tech, you already know about the gesture manipulated UI - and I still want one.

Thought-provoking and visceral,a dark and dazzling specticle,too intricate and difficult to follow miscast,misguided and often nonsensical superficial action film. Its fairly persuasive future-projections are cast aside at the mid-point so that Cruise can run,leap,kick and look anxious but determined as cliches multiply around him. The fashionable fussy,funky veneer may convince some that the film's serious,but it's finally another chase pic,murky in detail muddled in idealogy and strangely prediciple in dramatic thrust.

This high-tech,highly charged sci-fi saga has many fine ingredients,but goes on for far too long. Multible endings,and growing confusion,diminish the effectivess of the film.

Spielberg conceived the idea of a future world permeated with intrusive Capitalism and Government surveillance. It visualises a future where the unconscious has been thoroughly colonized.

The films central theme is the question of free will v determinism. It examines whether free will can exist if the future is set and known in advance. Other themes include the role of preventative government in protecting its citizenry,the role of media in a future state where electronic advancements make its presence nearly boundless. Also the fragility of the family is a theme.

It is one of Spielberg's harshest and signifies his developement as a film maker.

Minority Report has a unique visual style-uses high contrasts to create dark colours and shadows,like film noir. The films overlit shots featured desaturated colours which were achieved by bleach-bypassing the films negative in post -production.

Spielberg consulted technology experts in preproduction to create a plausible future reality. Some of the technologies were later realized :Multi-Touch Interface,Retina Scanners.

Is whether the future is set or whether free will can alter the future. That the arrest of criminals before they have a chance to commit their crime had some real world background in post 9/11 America. Spielberg said that we're giving up some of our freedom so that the government can protect us. The future of Minority Report of retinal scans,robotic human inspectors,and intrusive,individualized public advertising arrived as America was debating how much government intrusion into personal matters was necessary to ensure the safety of its citizens.

The process by which the images are interpreted makes it so that no one individual can understand without the use of the apparatus. The machinery is so effective and precise that the onmipresent system effectively makes capture more certain than crime.

The film has a fantastic premise (based on a story by Philip K Dick), and I want to like it more, but ultimately it's quite middle of the road.

The main problem is that it's not sure what type of film it wants to be. On one hand you have Philip K Dick bleak dystopian vision of the future, and on the other you have the mainstream action/adventure antics of Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg. As you would expect the two never quite gel. But it's fairly enjoyable and it passes the time.

not worth watching the plot is so flat and boring. ok it has the big names of Tom cruise, Colin Farrell and directed but Steven Spielberg. but thats not a recipe that work
