(18)Pure joy
By Gray2 (198 reviews) from London, England , 07 Apr 2012No idea why I was sent a Xmas film during Holy Week, but it was great! It's actually ideal for a holiday week when you want something escapist you don't have to concentrate too hard on. And yet, there's real suspense as the plot unfolds. It's about an old man who's put on trial for believing himself to be the 'real' Father Xmas. No lawyer wants to touch the case because, who wants to be the 'killjoy' responsible for declaring that 'there is no Santa Claus'?! Personally I don't think this is a film for kids as such (after all, they'd probably be intolerant of the black & white format!) and I certainly enjoyed watching the lawyers squirm about a trial they just don't want to come to court, especially as the old guy himself displays such magic charm and can genuinely cheer hearts and unite old enemies.- Was this review helpful to you?

The original and the better
By Bangs (36 reviews) from Oving , 11 Mar 2010It is interesting to compare the 80's re-make with this, the original. Ironically this is funnier, the 80's version more schmaltzy. The 80's version has its strengths - not least Richard Attenborough's portrayal - but this is less gawdy with a clearer plot. It is also interesting that the film plays as much to the sceptics as the believers. If you had to choose, see this version but either version is guaranteed to bring a lump to the sternest throat- Was this review helpful to you?

A Classic Christmas Favourite!!!
By a customer from Wolverhampton , 06 Jan 2010After never seeing this original version and loving the 1994 remake, I have to say I rate them both highly for essential festive viewing.
A great one to watch with the little ones on a cold winters day, just snuggle up and let the magic of 'Kriss Kringle' enchant you!!! :)- Was this review helpful to you?

Still Going Strong at 60
By a customer from Doncaster , 25 Nov 2008The original version of this charming fantasy surrounding the identity of Father Christmas which has become an American classic. Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle is ideally cast and little Natalie Wood, probably one of the best child actresses ever, shows a rare talent its a pity that it was never fully realised as an adult. Maureen O'Hara in a subdued role and John Payne is rather colourless. It has an excellent supporting cast of familiar faces, people you know but can't put a name to like Porter Hall, Jerome Cowan, Thelma Ritter,Gene Lockhart and William Frawley. A feel good film for Christmas or any other time of the year.- Was this review helpful to you?
