It is interesting to compare the 80's re-make with this, the original. Ironically this is funnier, the 80's version more schmaltzy. The 80's version has its strengths - not least Richard Attenborough's portrayal - but this is less gawdy with a clearer plot. It is also interesting that the film plays as much to the sceptics as the believers. If you had to choose, see this version but either version is guaranteed to bring a lump to the sternest throat
