LOVEFiLM Review
-
By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM
It gathered quite a buzz in Cannes but Tom Charity thinks this is one of the most overrated movies of the year.

A bally scary ride through Mexico's war on drugs
By DanDanger (9 reviews) from Edinburgh , 16 Nov 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
In Miss Bala Gerardo Naranjos camera picks up the willowy Laura Guerrero (former model Stephanie Sigman) as she completes chores before attending the Miss Baja California beauty contest. Things soon start to go wrong during a terrifying attack on a nightclub and for the next 90 pulsating minutes Naranjos camera doesnt leave Guerreros side as Mexicos war on drugs embroils another innocent victim.
In a style reminiscent of Gomorrah, the audience must grip their armrests as the ride is a blend of a rollercoaster and ghost train with action bursting into the frame. Naranjo sticks to his chosen storytelling guns, revealing only bits of the story playing out around his protagonist. This works. But only to an extent. The plotlines forming the maelstrom of violence in Miss Balas world only occasionally come into focus.
An old adage of cinema states that a confused audience is not an emoting one. And in Miss Bala, a little bit more detail of the surrounding stories could have been revealed. However, the long tracking shots and freefalling storytelling make this film a blast of a watch, not to mention a shot in the arm about the cost of a drug war to Mexico.- Was this review helpful to you?

Look beyond the title
By a customer , 03 Jan 2013A profound film that needs to be seen twice to appreciate it. You will see how manipulation pulls a person into the downward spiral.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tough life of a beauty queen
By all-at-sea (11 reviews) , 23 Dec 2012The film seemed to lose a bit of momentum after the half way point, which was a shame as up to then it had been brilliant. It is shot from the point of view of the lead character, a young woman who wants to become a beauty queen but who falls into the hands of a drugs gang. Reminded me of 'Get Carter' with its low-life realism and theme of corruption. Of course, the weather is better in Mexico.- Was this review helpful to you?

Miss this
By Norfolkgal (55 reviews) , 05 Jun 2012This was not what I expected from the advertisement and was considerably less exciting.
Direction of the story was a little uncontrolled and the film wandered from scene to scene rather arbitrarily. There was some violence and life in Mexico is portrayed as dangerous with corruption rife in all spheres, coupled with the trade in drugs overshadowing most things. The main character appeared to be rather helpless and swept along by events and not in control of her life. It was not a great piece of entertainment nor added anything new to what one suspects that life is like in this country.- Was this review helpful to you?
