When a notorious criminal mastermind known only as the Citizen threatens to terrorize the Miss United States Pageant, the FBI scours their ranks to find a female agent capable of winning the contest and capturing the killer before it's too late. Special Agent Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) may be the most physically beautiful woman in the Bureau, but her tomboyish lack of feminine grace jeopardizes the plan and spells disaster. Forced to turn to the once-proud beauty pageant consultant Victor Melling (Michael Caine), Agent Eric Matthews (Benjamin Bratt) tries to accomplish the impossible goal of transforming Hart from an unrefined rogue to a model candidate of elegance, poise, and style, with the irresistible power to win the pageant and simultaneously catch the killer. MISS CONGENIALITY combines the hilarious physical comedy and girl-next-door charm of Bullock with Caine's trademark British wit and impotent outrage, adding up to plenty of comedy, glamour, and catastrophe.

Sandra Bullock returns to form in this energetic comedy from director Donald Petrie that focuses on the world of beauty pageants. When a terrorist threatens the Miss United States competition, Bullock's determinedly unfeminine FBI agent is drafted in as a contestant. Pampered and preened by contest expert Michael Caine (who doesn't allow his campness to stray into caricature), Bullock uncovers her own feminine side and has some of her preconceptions shattered. Her relationship with FBI colleague Benjamin Bratt sparkles with sexual chemistry and the gags come thick and fast. The antics of the competition's hosts, Candice Bergen and William Shatner, are slightly overplayed, but on the whole this is great fun.
Comedy targets don't come much easier than the American beauty pageant industry, and this Bullock vehicle milks the... read more on Time Out
Sandra Bullock plays a rough-around-the-edges FBI agent, sent undercover to infiltrate the most kitschy of events; the 'Miss United States' beauty pagent.
I admit, in theory; it doesn't look too good, but in practise, everything just seems to click and turns 'Miss Congenialty' into a movie that is so much better than it has any right to be.
Ms Bullock steals the show as Grace Hart/Gracie Lou Freebush and shows off her comedic ability to its full extent. The supporting cast of Michael Caine, William Shatner and Candice Bergen also play their respective roles perfectly.
My only (minor) gripe would be that the idea of transforming Sandra Bullock from a frumpy nerd into a glamorous beauty isn't really that unbelievable, but it takes absolutely nothing away from this charming, amusing movie.
The film that helped make Sandra Bullock a leading star, this relies heavily on her charming skills as a comedienne, stuntwoman and actress.
She plays a tough, totally unfeminine FBI agent who must become a contestant in the 'Miss America' beauty pageant show in order to foil a bombing plot. The film is unpretentious and makes no great, meaningful statements - its just a fun 'popcorn' movie, no more no less.
Any promising young actress willing to appear made up to be extraordinarily unnatractive for the opening stages of the movie has to have more qualities than just looks to offer, and the film has to come up with an enjoyable script. Sandra Bullock and 'Miss Congeniality' provide both. I hope 'Miss Congeniality 2' will be just as good.
