The Redoubtable Joan Hickson as Miss Marple
By a customer from Milchester , 03 Jul 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I'm not sure that there is much point debating who has been the best Miss Marple on screen, but I know that many people believe Joan Hickson to win that accolade. This is disc 3 in the series, but they can be watched out of the linear progression of that numbering.
This is a cracking Christie story played well by all involved. Joan Hickson gives an understated and well-observed performance and has excellent support from actors such as Joan Sims. It is easy to be drawn into the story and even if you know the ending of the story, this is excellent fun to watch.
Post-war 1950s Britain was a fascinating time and of course the Miss Marple stories evoke many feelings including perhaps a nostalgia for the 'village Britain' it portrays, but they also touch upon issues such as identity and the long struggles people underwent during WWII and how the euphoria at the end of war easily subsided as people still suffered rationing, for example.
This captures the period wonderfully, Miss Marple is a joy to behold in tweed and all the performances are marvellous! Even the filming has stood up well, or at least the transfer to DVD must have, because the outdoor filming and locations look natural and bright, rather than that often fake or ill-lit shot which is often apparent in 1970s and 1980s television.
This cannot be faulted. I just know I'll be sad when I've seen all 12 discs. If you have only seen the recent ITV series, I heartily recommend you see this and appreciate that not every Miss Marple production has to have its tongue in its cheek.
Wonderful fun and a great Murder Mystery!- Was this review helpful to you?

Miss Marple. A Murder is Announced
By lizzrod (1 review) from ts12 , 03 Oct 2010I have seen all the Joan Hickson Marples and enjoyed every one. Wanted to watch this one but the front cover depicts Geraldine McEwan as the famous sleuth. Which one will it be on the dvd? The mystery deepens. Anyone out there know who it is?- Was this review helpful to you?

Brilliant As Always
By a customer from Sussex , 12 Mar 2010Another wonderful Joan Hickson Miss Marple. A great mystery and a brilliant supporting cast - every single one a stunner. And how beautifully Joan Hickson as Miss Marple stays modestly in the background and then quietly unleashes the dénouement and clears everything up. Unsurpassed.- Was this review helpful to you?
