    [Highly rated reviewer]

Agatha Christie adaptations are a hit and miss affair, as it's very easy just to burlesque the main character because Christie always writes them with slightly clumsy eccentricities, so Miss Marple's often a dotty old bat, and Poirot's an obsessive compulsive nutjob. The last TV adaptations of both of these magnificently avoid falling into these traps. Joan Hickson positively sparkles as Miss Marple, apparently dotty, but underneath it fiendishly calculating. Good stuff, as long as you like Agatha Christie.

Joan Hickson is a good Marple. Have started watching the whole series - very relaxing, easy-going dramas. Nice for a Sunday evening.

One of the strengths of the BBC's 1980s adaptations of Christie's Miss Marple stories was the brilliant casting choices for all characters. A Pocketful of Rye is no exception, with sublime performances from Cadell (her tv debut) as the all-knowing and 'excellent' Miss Dove, Wilkinson as D.I. Neele, Drake formidable as Aunt Effie and Kendall hilarious as Mrs. Crump. The wintery landscape and light give the piece a dark and rather uncomfortable feel, all adding to the chilly proceedings. All this and another brilliantly realised portrait of 'the Marple woman' by Hickson. A treat!

Joan Hickson, excellent production and Agagtha Christie's clever, entertaining writing make for another enjoyable Miss Marple story.

(Helpful note: Avoid the new Geraldine McEwan versions at all costs. Her interpretation of Miss Marple is of an arrogant, pushy, and ghastily dressed ghoul is nearly stomach turning).
