Wonderful

Absolute wonderful drama which both the BBC and ITV seemed to have forgotten how to make !

Everything about this production simply shines : Joan Hickson is quite simply perfect in the titular role, the period detail is astonishing and everyone of the supporting actors give their best !

The DVD transfer of a near 20 year old TV programme looks faultless as well, the prints used are the unedited versions, only ever seen in this country on the first transmissions, so getting the 'cliffhanger' halfway through was an unexpected bonus.

A textbook exercise in inteligent dramatisation

When so much of the atmospere of a book relies on internal monologue there's always a danger that any dramatisation will discard the flavour of the original text entirely. Very nearly full marks to the writers, cast and production team here for doing no such thing. The innovative development of the Michael Rafiel character is well exectued and fits nicely into the original narrative. The only valid criticisms one could make concern the rather flat ending which can't hope to compete with the emotional tug of the book's last pages and the rather campy portrayal of Miss Marple's 'guardian angels' throughout. These aside the bleakness and brooding menace of the book is marvellously sustained throughout. It should of course go without saying that The Hickson is on fine form here and a joy to watch.
