Moliere
By a customer from London W10 6JS , 25 Jul 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Mnouchkine's film of the life of Moliere is astonshingly powerful and moving: some extraordinary carnivalesque sequences, visually exciting throughout, and the last sequence, with its musical backing from (I think) Purcell is overwhelming. One of the great films, which should be much better known. Mnouchkine was granted an honorary degree by Oxford University this year, for her work in the theatre and film, which is why we were prompted to rent this movie. Well done Oxford.- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)Good and pleasant
By Arcachon (2 reviews) from Windsor , 09 Oct 2009In a typical french film, it is very well made, but with some 'longueurs', some scenes could be shorter. But it's the classic of french films isn't it? Mind, it's 5 hours long!
Lovely settings, decors, you do get immersed in the film.
More could have been said/shown on the politic aspect of Moliere's last daring pieces.
A good film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Moliere
By a customer from Faversham , 28 Apr 2009A truly great film, with wondeful peformances through out. A brilliant insite into how theatre used to be and the great French Playwright.

Excellent film
By Aubergine (22 reviews) from St. Ives , 27 Mar 2009I loved this. Not only was it a well devised and beautifully filmed film, but it really captured the hardships and happiness of Moliere's life as a young travelling actor in seventeenth century France: his relationship with his theatre troupe;his complicated tangle of love affairs and of course his plays. Seventeenth Century France is often glamorised on film but this film explored the lower echelons of society, from the beautiful carnival scenes on the streets of Orleans to the poverty sticken and starving masses in the countryside. Moliere's later success as he received a stipend from the King was also depicted very well. Time is given to looking at Moliere's plays as well as the petty jealousies within the theatre troupe. I particularly loved the scenes of Louis XVI, treated as a 'deity' on earth.
In a nutshell, the film was interesting and well researched, beautifully filmed and well acted -'Moliere' was fantastic!- Was this review helpful to you?
