Still a Great
By Charles Telling from Sunderland, Tyne & Wear , 07 Jul 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I first saw this film on video, some years ago. It has lost none of its sparkle, maybe the fashions are a bit dated. But it shows what a great actor Bob Hoskins really is. And what a great British Cast Which includes a Young Robie Coltrane, the great Micheal Caine and newcomer Cathy Tyson. Along with the Long Good Friday, also with Bob Hoskins. It shows the British can make great films which stand the test of time.- Was this review helpful to you?

(16)Bit Dated but no moans!
By vicboy (47 reviews) , 24 Dec 2011Little dated now. Takes a darker turn about halfway through.
Hoskins always good VFM but, overall, film not quite as good as I remember it being when it first came out, although the use of the Mona Lisa tune throughout is excellent.- Was this review helpful to you?

Its not a fine wine - so its not aged too well Im afraid!
By a customer , 07 Dec 2011Oh dear - this is slightly embarrassing to watch in 2011. The performances are pretty alright on the whole, but the script is just too dated and doesn't really pick a part race relations like it should. Why is it OK for racist language to be used and then for it to not be reflected upon or dealt with in any sensitive way? There is also the problem that when women get slapped about in the movie, they then feel they need to apologise to the men doing the slapping. Hmmm. Its just wrong really isn't it? In hindsight, I don't think I should have watched the movie. I didn't take anything away from it - at all!- Was this review helpful to you?

A real Gem
By MamaG (13 reviews) from Glasgow , 22 Aug 2008I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Bob Hoskins was fantastic...his performance both touching and poignant. Its a gritty movie and we really feel Hoskins frustrations and hopelessness as he sees the seedy and violent side of prostitution.
This is a real gem of a film.- Was this review helpful to you?
