  • Touchingly funny tale

Essentially this is a story about a group of mainly unemployed men doing next to nothing, which in principle doesn't sound interesting in the least. However, two of these men are played by two of Spain's greatest actors-Javier Bardem and Luis Tosar who captivate and intrigue you and the direction by Fernando Le?n de Aranoa is wonderful. The group of men all gather in Rico's bar in a city in the North of Spain, where once they were employed in local factories that have since closed, and spend their time chatting, planning and berating one another. Interestingly (although it was filmed in Vigo) no specific city is ever mentioned, lending the location both an air of anonymity and sense that we are witnessing an everyman's tale which could be in any country. This film has a beautiful poignancy as well as some genuinely funny moments and in many ways is reminiscent of films such as 'The Full Monty' and 'Brassed Off' in its at times amusing and at times sad portrayl of the lives of a group of unemployed men questioning their identity and their value.

Great film that really gets you involved and empathising with the characters. Touching, sensitive and funny. Defo one to watch.

Such a great script - funny but not at all forced. Just a great slow lazy rhythm but still you get to know all the characters. Very funny but yes it is sad too and given the woes in spain right now its very topical.

Very much like a Spanish Ken Loach film. Javier Bardem is always mesmerising to watch; here he's a strangely charming loafer, bitter at the way the shipyard workers were laid off, but refusing to accept that the fight was lost years ago.

It's a moving story about a bunch of sad ex-dockyard workers. Straight story telling with funny moments. Not bad in all.
