Computer animation pioneers Pixar (Toy Story, A Bug's Life) continue their exploration of magical worlds that keep themselves hidden from human eyes with this frantic, funny and very furry animated feature. This time the focus is on the creatures that lurk inside the bedroom closets of children and who venture out to terrify their human prey when the lights are off. Creatures such as towering fluffball Sulley (voiced by John Goodman) and malevolent chameleon Randall (Steve Buscemi) are employees of Monsters Inc, a power provider for the city of Monstropolis, which is fuelled by the screams of human children. But Monstropolis is facing an energy crisis. Youngsters are getting harder to scare and, to make matters worse, Sulley accidentally lets a little girl into a realm where kids are believed to be highly toxic. Packed with the sort of artistry and storytelling panache we've come to expect from Pixar, the film creates a believable monsters' universe full of colour, energy and amusing creatures — especially the two horned, one-eyed joker known as Mike (voiced by Billy Crystal at his wisecracking best). The attention to detail is as staggering as ever, right down to the subtle movements of Sulley's rippling blue fur. A genuine monster smash.
"...There hasn't been a film in years to use creative energy as efficiently as MONSTERS, INC.; this is one clean-burning fuel engine that doesn't waste a joke or a thought..."
Marvellously animated movie that reveals another leap forward in computer animation; but there's a step back in content here, which is too cute and sentimental by half.
Yes, it?s a kid?s movie ? but this is animation at its best. Monsters, Inc. is the type of film Disney used to make. Sure the computer animation is new, but the old Disney formula is the same here. Great animation, lovable characters, a simple plot, and slapstick humour are what made Disney films like 101 Dalmatians, Dumbo, Pinocchio, etc. all great children?s films. Monsters, Inc, however has done what these films could not do by extending its audience beyond your standard 3-11 year old.
The creators of Monsters, Inc. have paid enormous attention to detail in their work such that jokes like an ooze-generating monster mopping a floor, or an abominable snowman serving yellow snow cones (No, its lemon!) will entertain adults who normally don't find animation very interesting.
It is fortunate that Disney (Pixar in this case) has chosen to veer away from the formula that made its animated cartoons go 'over the top' in the past. Yes, I mean the singing! The music chosen for this film goes over well and does not steal the show from the principal actors (Billy Crystal and John Goodman) and features a duet from the two at the closing credits (Oscar nominated song 'If I didn't have you'.
Crystal works well as the scare 'coach' Mike Wazowski, Disney could have chosen 'over the top comedian Robin Williams for this part but wisely chose Billy Crystal whose comedy was light hearted and fun. Goodman gave a stellar performance as scare legend 'Sully?, the scarer who falls in love with a little child.
While there were some plot holes (how did Mike get back from the snow world?), I thoroughly enjoyed this film and recommend it to anyone, especially to those with children.
WARNING: great Film, but despite the screen-shots this is the full-screen version and there's no widescreen option on this DVD.
Touching, funny, animation full of ideas and imagination. Great for kids and grown-ups alike. Good DVD with plenty of extras. I would recommend this to anyone has yet to see it! Go get it!
Maybe a kids film but great for adults too! The animation is amazing and kept my attention for the whole film, almost shed a tear or two too!
Well worth watching whatever age you may be.
They have managed to make a film that adults and kids can both enjoy.
This will keep the kids happy and won't drive you mad. Not sure I can watch it over and over again but it is certainly a good film and the characters seem so human other then the way they look! Plenty of jokes aimed at the adults and enough action to stop the kids from getting bored.
If you need a film for the whole family this is a great one to choose.

Is this a film for the Kids or Adults?
Well, I got the film for the Kids but became so engrossed that I decided that it must rate in my top 10 movies of all time.
'So, your just a sentimental female' I hear you say. Well no I am actually a fairly battle hardened bloke but still found the film clever & amusing with moments that every every parent can relate to or any person with childhood memories of monsters under the bed.
Well worth the 5 stars.
Despite being a convert to the world of animation, I initially held off viewing this film, in protest at the seemingly insane need for John Goodman to be cast in any large, loveable, goofy role (re: The Flinstones and possibly real life Homer). However, I was amazed to find that not only did his charm and vocal skills enrich this film with a down to earth grittiness, he also managed to allow me to experience this film with little or no fixation on the actors behind the voices. Billy Crystal is also excellent and the visual elements are stunning e.g. Sully's Fur. Hats off to Disney/Pixar, a masterpiece of ingenuity coupled with a simplistic but stirring plot line.
I expected something from the same team as Toy Story to be much like that (the trailers certainly suggested that). I was quite surprised. This is a great movie to keep you alert (I was nearly asleep when it started and I soon woke up). With great animation, believeable characters and a good story-line, this is great movie for kids and adults alike. It's the perfect film to watch with your children
Very good, best so far. Great original storyline. Has the edge over Finding Nemo! Watch and enjoy...
This is a good entertainer, but certainly not in the league of 'Finding Nemo' or any other of Disney's or Pixar's greatest works - though it's not bad! The idea of the plot is interesting and instantly you can see where it will be heading. At the heart, it tells of human (and monster) bonds that knit us all together. What the movie fails to do, however, is secure the dialogue of the script to make it originally funny. Worth a watch, nonetheless!
In my opinion, the best Disney/Pixar movie so far. Very funny and very well animated. It was better than Toy Story and way better than Finding Nemo. A great movie for kids, but adults can enjoy the humour too. Definitely worth renting!
Monsters Inc is a fantastic film. It certainly warms the heart of saddest viewers and you do not feel too old to watch it.
I just love the fact that it can be enjoyed by all ages without anyone feeling to old for it. There is a real art to that and the directors and writers of Monsters Inc are getting ticks in all the right boxes.
Definatly worth a viewing if not to purchase it as I have a feeling one could watch it many times over without getting bored of it.
