With the help of her terminally ill counterpart, Nick (Stanley Tucci), she weathers a series of violent encounters with the henchmen sent to kill her. Though directed by a woman (Jennifer Leitzes) and centering around a female assassin (Kyra Sedgwick) framed and pursued by gun-wielding mobsters, this crime drama doesn't have any ambitions to offer a feminist perspective. The focus is definitely more on dialogue and characters than violence, though, which makes the bloody shoot-outs seem slightly out of place. The best and most original parts of the movie are its bizarre flashes of humour, while the cast is certainly worth a look (Robbie Coltrane, John Ritter, Philip Seymour Hoffman).

    Not Your Average Gangster Flick

With a cast like Robbie Coltrane, Stanley Tucci and Philip Seymour Hoffmann this film was a must for me to rent. Enjoyed it in the end, but found parts too slow to properly enjoy, after all there are only so many twists in a story of Mob Boss trying to recover stolen money.

Worth renting if running out of choices!

    Hanks heads west

    • 16 Jun 2004

Tom Hanks looks like he is heading west for the first time. Reports indicate that he has now signed up for a western. The Oscar winner has acted in over thirty films - including adventures in space, with a mermaid, in various wars, and as a toy cowboy - but he has never been in the Wild West. "Boone's Lick" will see Hollywood's most bankable star work alongside Julianne Moore. Moore plays Hanks' character's sister-in-law. Moore's character takes her family from Boone's Lick, Montana,...
