Soothing and sensitive
By Robert Smith from Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. , 05 Feb 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a review of L'Orfeo only I find Monteverdi music both sensitive and soothing, and this which is probably the first opera of note, is no exception. It demonstrates his skills to perfection, with attention to drama, to large scale structure and to expressive detail. Considering it was composed in1607, and was
his first opera it shows the promise that was to follow. This is an excellent performance, and although the Gluck version has more'tunes', it is recommended.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)IL RITORNO D'ULISSE
By a customer from Bath , 06 Sep 2009A gorgeous rendition of the last act from the Odyssey with Penelope (Graciela Araya) is effectively torn between loyalty to her probably dead husband and the desire to live and love as a woman. The whole is a tribute to faith in an age when mortals are at the mercy of divine forces in the form of time, fortune and love. Both performances are offset by Audi's simple timeless production.- Was this review helpful to you?

A very short cantata
By Robert Smith from Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. , 09 Feb 2008This is a review of 'Combattimento di Trancredi e Clorinda'. I can only give this two stars based on value not performance. This cantata is only 23 minutes long and being the only piece on the dvd it is a bit of a rip off. I cannot see why it was not added to one of the other dvds in the set. The three performers are alright but only the Narrator has much actual singing : Tancredi and Clorinda dressed in full armour are maInly to busy fighting.- Was this review helpful to you?
