Complete with some inspired digressions and shorn of some of the weaker sketches, the soundtrack album of the Pythons' first story-based feature is even funnier than the film itself. Yet this remains a wonderfully inventive comedy that brilliantly debunks the Dark Ages and legends of chivalry through King Arthur's encounters with an anarcho-syndicalist commune, the Black Knight, God (courtesy of Terry Gilliam) and the “knights who say ni”. The Camelot and Sir Robin songs also get beneath the visor, but the highlights are the trial of Connie Booth's witch and the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch sequence. Shame about the ending, though.

Hellzapoppin-like series of linked sketches on a medieval theme; some slow bits, but often uproariously funny and with a remarkable visual sense of the Middle Ages.

    Still funny

OK, so the Pythons are all grey now and doing TV commercials that they shouldn't, but this is probably the best introduction to Python you can get.

I showed my girlfriend this as a first taste of Python (she grew up on Mars ...) and we were both in stitches -- so many funny parts to this I won't even try to pick a favourite -- actually, I will, the 'Bring out your dead' bit is hilarious.

Bit of a weak ending though, just like this review...

Great film, shame about the extras...

I think most people have commented on what a classic this film is, and I would agree. I was, however, disappointed in the bonus disk, the extras were not that entertaining, the 'How to use your coconuts' being the only thing to raise a laugh from me. So, rent the film disk, but not the bonus disk...

    Sublime

I am of the opinion that the Monty Pythons, like the Beatles, are so revered that sometimes you forget how good they were. Admittedly, calling the Beatles underrated is probably not a theory that'll get me very far, but whatever.

What can you say about a film like this? Except that it's wonderful. A slew of stupendously hilarious characters, the politically sensitive peasant ('strange women in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government'), the taunting frenchman ('I'm french, why do you think I have this outrageous accent you silly king'), the gruff yorkshire dad ('aye, I know camelot, very good pig country'), the black knight ('Look you stupid b*stard, you've got no arms left'), and more.

They were just incapable of not being funny.

Not as funny as Life Of Brian

Unless you are already a massive Monty Python fan, it is unlikely that this will have you wetting your pants with laughter - except for a few really funny bits (The insulting Frenchman, The Black Knight etc).

It is even spoiled a bit by the inclusion of some characters that are so off-the-wall that they ruin the tone of the film, eg the modern policemen.

The songs are excellent though and VERY catchy - be warned! - and it's easy to see why some of the catchphrases really caught on! Who needs the likes of 'Little Britain' and 'Catherine Tate' when truly original (if a little dull sometimes) comedy already exists in vintage form?

The ending is a bit of a damp squib though.

    nothing as constant as change

i watched this film on the cinema when it first came out and it made me laugh especially the black knight and the rabbit bits however watching it again years later very disappointed and got to 22 minutes and turned it off.

yes the black knight fight made me smile but not as it had in the past. it was a great funny film for the time but watching it again shows me that everything has a shelf life and the python comedy is certainly past its sell by date and starting to pong a bit and needs to be put in the rubbish bin

    Funnier with repetition

This is one of those films that somehow becomes funnier upon repeat viewings, to the point that you will eventually be reciting the lines of the script involuntarily.

For my money, it packs more laughs per square inch of celluloid than the TV series, and a few of the scenes -- the Black Knight and the bridge crossing come to mind -- are the stuff of comedy legend.

    Hilarious Classic !

I can't believe there's anyone out there that hasn't seen this film but if you're reading this review, then I guess you haven't ! Like all the Python films, 'The Holy Grail' is a classic - Ridiculously silly and totally surreal (Monty Python's trademarks). I must admit, I enjoyed this film much more when I about 12 years old but having watched it again recently it's still worth a go - especially if you haven't seen it before (which obviously you haven't !). Watch it with your mates and you'll be quoting the script for weeks !...

    Words fail me

Oh My God, having just watched this for the first time in many years I just can't believe how bad it is! I also cannot get my head around the fact that I once found it funny! Hilariously funny. Watching it now I was in a state of acute embarrasment. This film has not aged well.

    Why do people love it??

Having heard so many people over the years rave about this 'classic' comedy, i decided I should give it a go. All I can say is why does everyone love it so much? maybe it was funny at the time it first came out but now it is niether funny nor entertaining. I struggled through the first 45 minutes tying hard to see something in it but it never happened and I put myself out of my misery by turning it off and sending it straight back.

My advice is, if you have not seen it dont, and if you watched it years ago and loved it hold onto those memories and never go back!!!

    awful movie

it may be a classic movie but i personally felt its a waste of time. It's not funny, it's boring - a waste of time really.

    Funny

Funny - just a lot. Some small minded people took it too seriously on release - it is supposed to be funny with a black humorous look at life and it succeeds very well.
