Tragic!
By chlo from Kent , 04 Feb 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This is the first Indian film that I've ever seen, and although I enjoyed it, it is really quite dated. The story is the epic saga of one woman's life and is in turns tragic, tragic, tragic a little comic and then tragic again. It is lightened by the numerous songs that are a feature of all Bollywood cinema. Unfortunately the words of the songs were not subtitled so I had no idea what was going on during those scenes. It didn't seem to affect my enjoyment of the film though.- Was this review helpful to you?

By M0Z (4 reviews) from Surrey , 05 Jan 2011Classic Indian movie depicting the trials of motherhood, struggle and survival in a world where everything is against the odds.
Excellent performances by Nargis and supporting actors. Old classical songs are beautifully depicted. An excellent anecdote for parents and youth alike.- Was this review helpful to you?

Mother India
By a customer from UK , 03 Sep 2010A landmark film that is worth watching for Nargis's performance alone. Enjoyable and fascinating on lots of levels, in particular - the influence of socialist realist art characteristic of Stalinist Russia, and as a movie made during the early years of Indian independence.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not for the youngsters of today
By a customer from Hampshire , 29 Jan 2009This is only the second Indian film I've seen all the way through (Lagaan being the other).
If you want all-action, hip soundtrack, beautiful people - in other words a typical modern film then this is not for you. If instead you want to see a film from a bygone age with a real storyline that a lot of people of a certain age can relate to then this is the film for you.
The poverty, struggles, hierarchy of a typical farming village are all brought vividly to life. The story is simple, engaging and very moving.
Watch it. Give it a chance. You may even learn something.- Was this review helpful to you?
