Stylistically a kind of amalgamation of Bergman, Teshigahara and Tarkovsky, Mother Joan of the Angels tells a story of repressed love using the actual events of The Possession of Loudun as a basis. In the early 17th century a group a nuns, reportedly possessed by demons, are visited by various priests who attempt to exorcise them. This film focuses on of one the priests, Father Jozef Suryn and his encounter with Mother Joan and their subsequent struggle against temptation. Some great performances, especially by Lucyna Winnicka (Joan) and Mieczyslaw Voit (Father Jozef), and some wonderful crisp black and white photography make for some striking and memorable scenes and images that stay with you long after the film has finished. Recommended.
