Pass the Tissues - or the Sick Bag
By FrankIV (504 reviews) from Cirencester, England , 20 Mar 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
The characters played by Annette Bening and Naomi Watts spend the first hour of this smart contemporary drama doing their best to alienate anyone who tries to be kind to them by being spectacularly rude, abrasive or manipulative, but, this being twenty-first century liberal America, no-one is really unpleasant - unless, of course, they vote Republican - simply victims of deep emotional traumas which, once confronted, will clear to enable them to find their inner loveliness. They are helped in this by children, a courageous blind girl, a kindly nun and a collection of characters from various ethnic minorities who are unfailingly kind, helpful, warm, humane and caring, providing a contrast to all the prickly white angst in the centre of the screen. Running alongside this is a plot involving an unfailingly honest, warm, humane and courageous Afro-American couple desperate for a child. The ways in which these three plots are unified and resolved will have you reaching either for a box of tissues or the sick bag. Unfortunately, this heap of mawkish, patronising, sentimental nonsense is very well made and acted, hence the begrudgingly given three stars. Bah, humbug!- Was this review helpful to you?

Worth a watch
By a customer , 23 Mar 2013Beautiful film, well acted, well directed, amazing story - absolutely loved it. There is nothing better than a film which just asks the viewer to sit and watch and learn about some very interesting characters which is what this film did - i cried a couple of times and would recommend this to anyone.- Was this review helpful to you?

A different kind of action my guest was used too!
By tankhillmax (14 reviews) from bridgnorth , 20 Mar 2013My husband and I had an elderley gentleman staying with us when we watched this film and his usual choice of film is action films so I was a little unsure how he would feel about this film. However, he enjoyed it thoroughly as we did. The action in this was more of a sexual kind so be aware if watching it with old aunty Joan!- Was this review helpful to you?

Thought provoking
By Balamb (32 reviews) from Bangor , 31 Jan 2013This is a beautiful movie, very touching and very thought-provoking. Annette Bening is marvellous in this role and it was nice to see Jimmy Smits (L. A. Law) back again on screen.- Was this review helpful to you?
