LOVEFiLM Review Mother

  • 4.5 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Korean actress Kim Hye-je delivers a stunning performance as the mother of a mentally challenged boy who is accused of a murder. The highly unorthodox methods used to prove her son's innocence make this a fascinating study of the complexity of motherly love.

  • Another great film from Bong Joon-ho

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The latest film from South Korean maestro Bong Joon-Ho is a strange and compelling mystery about a mother’s unconditional love for her son. The story revolves around the titular mother, determined to uncover the truth of her son’s conviction for murder. During her investigation she tumbles through a maze of mucky lawyers and policemen, untrustworthy school friends, judgemental neighbours, and through her love for her son, edges closer to the truth. There’s a great scene, which seems to be a direct homage to David Lynch’s dark suburban masterpiece Blue Velvet, where the mother hides in a wardrobe to watch a couple’s most intimate moments and sneaks out whilst they’re asleep. Throughout the whole film the acting is perfect, especially Kim Hye-Ja as the mother, whilst the scenery and shots of small town South Korea are beautiful, with some even reminding me of Terrance Malick’s classic Days of Heaven. It’s a very surprising, rewarding and fulfilling film. Recommended.

Original and clever, the story of a mother stopping at nothing to prove her 28 year old, mentally handicapped son’s innocence after he is accused of murder, keeps you gripped throughout. There are mesmerising and shocking moments, in a beautifully shot and beautifully acted wrapping.

The basic idea for this film is very simple - young man with learning difficulties gets arrested for murder, his devoted mother sets out to prove he is innocent. However, 'Mother' offers a great deal more.

First there is the relationship between mother and son. At first glance it seems a little odd but is, in fact, a tragedy. Secrets are revealed and heart-ache unveiled - possibly even triumph although the filmmakers are too intelligent, mentally and emotionally, to allow it to be too easy.

Then there's the Murder. A young girl left for the town to see - why? what was the motive? In true crime story style, there are lots of potential for motive, just as there are numerous could-be-murderers.

Finally, it's the mother. kim Hiy-Ja gives a powerful and complex performance. Whilst investigating the murder there is no doubt concerning her love and devotion and yet we know she has depths that she does not wish to reveal. Her skill as an actress is to deliver this real and believable character so convincingly.

Bong Joon-ho also directed the masterful 'The Host', which, although about a monster terrorising Korea, shares many of the same themes as Mother. Dysfunctional families, devotion and the heights and depths family will go to for one another. What is so amazing about his work is that he explores these things whilst still remaining very entertaining

  • A compelling performance

The lengths a mother (a slightly deranged one, at that) will go to in order to clear the name of her slow-witted son who’s been accused of murder. So what begins as a Korean version of “Murder She Wrote” slowly turns into something much much darker. And while it takes a little too long to explore all its labyrinthine corners, it’s firmly grounded by a compelling performance from its leading lady.

Whilst the lead actress deserved all the credit she got the film is slow and moves at a snails pace. I expected this to be alot beter but it was still worth sticking with.
