Cross LA BOHEME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle epoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

Or you can rent each disc individually:
Hyperkinetic, attention-seeking pop variation on La Bohème and La Traviata that is so over the top it parodies itself; its modern songs cannot carry the weight of emotion piled upon them, though it might have helped to have had a few singers in the cast.
"...Baz Luhrmann displays often amazing resourcefulness as he mixes a multitude of film and song styles to relate his quintessential tale of la vie boheme..."
Boring trash. Nothing more to say, I believed the hype about this film and could stand no more than 15 minutes before switching off in disgust...this was 3 years ago and to this day, it remains the worst film I have ever seen bar none.
...it is a veritable feast of cinematic pleasure. Set in Paris at the famous Moulin Rouge theatre the story unfolds of an illicit love affair between an impoverished writer (Ewan McGregor) and a beautiful courtesan (Nicole Kidman). But to describe this as a simple love story is as far from the truth as one could imagine. The tale of forbidden passion unfolds amidst beautiful and extravagant sets with musical interludes that are everything from enchanting and uplifting to bizarre and quite hilarious.
Baz Lurman ("Romeo and Juliet", "Strictly Ballroom") doesnt just direct the movie - he lovingly crafts a stunning, unique and stylised extravaganza that few of his peers could match. The performances of McGregor and Kidman are fresh and enthusiastic but Jim Broadbent and Richard Roxboro steal every scene they appear in, and their song and dance routine to Like a Virgin rates as a classic comedy movie moment of our time.
The only problem with "Moulin Rouge" is its duration; it runs at approximately two hours
you will wish it went on for much longer, it is an absolute delight.
