Cross LA BOHEME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle epoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

Hyperkinetic, attention-seeking pop variation on La Bohème and La Traviata that is so over the top it parodies itself; its modern songs cannot carry the weight of emotion piled upon them, though it might have helped to have had a few singers in the cast.
"...Baz Luhrmann displays often amazing resourcefulness as he mixes a multitude of film and song styles to relate his quintessential tale of la vie boheme..."
Boring trash. Nothing more to say, I believed the hype about this film and could stand no more than 15 minutes before switching off in disgust...this was 3 years ago and to this day, it remains the worst film I have ever seen bar none.
Beautifully told story, which had me sobbing my eyes out. I loved the art direction and the way scenes slip slided and drifted almost into dream like scenes. Almost like a fairy tale. Really enjoyed it. Very romantic. Not one for the real men out there!
Kylie Minogue is desperate to embark on a serious film career - begging directors to give her the same chance rocker Nick Cave offered when they dueted on anti-pop ballad Where The Wild Roses Grow. The Aussie pop star, best known for her catchy dance and pop tunes, shocked her fans when she teamed up with dark musician Cave for a rock track. And Minogue would love it if a similarly edgy director would give her the chance to become a respected big screen star - because acting is was how her... Read more
